Why Professional Development?
When Dr. Sung was working in K-12 education, she was an equity lead and union diversity representative. When she realized that Asian American communities were frequently overlooked, she decided to leave the classroom and help institutions become more culturally competent. Today, she is a national conference presenter. She was keynote speaker for the Washington State DEI Empowerment Conference and for the WA Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) DEIB Summit.
Dr. Sung was born in Los Angeles, California to two Korean American immigrants and was raised in the greater Seattle area. After graduating from college, she joined the United States Air Force when the economic recession proved difficult to get a job. She was a fighter jet mechanic on the F-22A Raptor. During her military service, she fell in love with her fellow Airman and they married in 2011 and had one son. After their military service was complete, they settled down in the greater Seattle area.
A national Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) conference presenter and consultant, Dr. Sung has a BA in English with an emphasis in Creative Writing, an MA in English, and a Doctorate in Education. Her articles regarding Asian American Pacific Islander (AAPI) voices appeared on the teacher blogs BuildingBookLove and TeachNouvelle and have also been published in TinyBeans.com, Mochi Magazine, Memoir Magazine, and Writerly Magazine. She has received a United States Air Force Medal of Achievement.
Her debut book, KINDA KOREAN: STORIES FROM AN AMERICAN LIFE will be released February 25, 2025 at major bookstores everywhere. It is available for preorder now.
